Ultrasound

Residents have different opportunities to learn bedside ultrasound (i.e EM elective and a designated track).  With expanding technologies and portability, ultrasound has fast become a valuable skill to augment the traditional physical exam and provide information for medical decision-making.

The Ultrasound track is a dedicated training track to give PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents hands-on teaching in volume assessment, cardiac, lung, and other ultrasound techniques. The track spans approximately 8 months of the academic year, from September to May each year. Led by our pulmonary critical care and cardiology faculty, this track is an excellent experience for those interested in hospitalist medicine or fellowship careers. In addition to specific track didactics that will introduce you to the best ultrasound techniques, faculty will audit image acquisition, giving individual specific feedback on images you acquire. Textbooks, online resources, and thumb drive will be provided.

Point-of-Care Ultrasound Track

The Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) track is a longitudinal course over 8 months consisting of didactics, hands-on workshops, and independent skills development. Track participants will be expected to attend all didactics and workshops, with regular office hours available for further in-person instruction. Participants will build a Portfolio that exhibits their skill in acquiring ultrasound images and applying clinical interpretation, which will be reviewed by trained faculty for quality and accuracy. This activity requires that the track participants be self-guided and independent with regular check-ins to monitor progress.

How to Apply: Residents will enter this track through an application and review process.  Applications will be reviewed by Dr. Vincent Chan and Dr. Joseph Hanna.

All enrollees must be in good academic standing without problem-focused remediation or professionalism issues. Applicants will be excluded if delinquent in reporting of duty hours or completion of medical records.

Ultrasound Curriculum on MS Teams

Track participants will be assigned access to the MS Teams. Check the Team for learning content and QA.
