Gastroenterology Consult

Rotations on the Gastroenterology Consult service are usually 1-2 weeks in length and spread out across residency training. Supervision on the service is provided by the Gastroenterology faculty with assistance from the UCLA GI fellow(s). The inpatient component, which comprises the major of the rotation, consists of inpatient consultations and rounds; housestaff are also invited to observe endoscopic procedures, particularly for their patients. The outpatient component of the rotation consists mainly of Monday morning Gastroenterology clinic (general Gastroenterology clinic [C] rotating weekly with Pre-endoscopy clinic [B]). In addition, educational conferences are provided during the rotation, including Pathology Conference every Wednesday afternoon and Journal Club one Tuesday per month.

When You Start

  • On the day before your consult rotation, page the Gastroenterology Fellow. Find out if you should get sign-out on any inpatient consults and what you should expect the first day of your rotation (when to round, where to meet, any didactics or clinic, etc.).
  • The Gastroenterology inpatient team usually meets in the GI/Pulm Lab on the 2nd floor (2C-175).
  • Please check in daily with the inpatient team (Fellow when available, otherwise Attending) around 8:00 am (i.e. prior to attending morning report) to help prioritize and triage consults.
  • On Monday mornings, join the GI team in clinic from 8:00-12:00 am.  Clinic is either in Clinic C on the 1st, 3rd, 5th Mondays of the month or in Clinic B on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month.
  • To page with Gastroenterology Fellow, log-in to AMION, go to paging, go to the Subspecialty Consult drop-down menu, select GI Fellow.
