US Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 3

It's the last step on the path to medical licensure. Interns should complete USMLE Step 3 and have results of a passing grade prior to the completion of PGY-1.

Instructions: R1's should work with the Chief Residents to schedule Step 3 before March.

American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM)

Graduates of the residency program are eligible to sit for board certification by the ABIM. Registration is open December through February prior to the exam period in August. Check the ABIM website for specific details.

Instructions: R3's who are in good standing and anticipating taking the Board exam in the fall after graduation should register for the ABIM Board Exam early during the registration period to get preferred dates and locations before the slots fill up. And study, study, study throughout residency and post-graduation.

Reports: Exam results are released online or mailed within 3 months of the last exam date.

Medical Board of California

All residents are required to apply for a California medical license prior to PGY-3. Unlicensed residents are not allowed to begin PGY-3. Candidates should have passing scores in the USMLE Steps 1-3.

Instructions: R2's should apply for the medical license as soon as you have passed Step 3. The process can take a few to several months.

CURES 2.0

DEA-licensed providers are required by law to register for CURES 2.0. This system is used to track patient prescriptions and prescriber information. Registered providers, including pharmacies, can query this information.
